چکیده

Hydrogen is likely to become a major new fuel for transport and district or domestic-scale combined heat and power systems in the 21st century. Depending on the specific production technology, hydrogen can displace fossil fuels and limit or completely displace the production of carbon dioxide. It may also enhance energy system security through increased storage capacity and reduction in the need for energy imports. This paper reports preliminary results from a project funded by the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research into the environmental impact of selected pathways for producing, storing, and distributing hydrogen in the context of a range of possible future energy economies. Historical examples of large scale technological change will be used to demonstrate how the integration of hydrogen into the energy supply system will depend on a complex interaction of government regulations, corporate strategies, institutional factors, and required technological developments. It will be shown that there is likely to be no single optimum architecture for the hydrogen economy and this will be further emphasised in exploring possible transition pathways for the integration of hydrogen into the UK energy mix. Various hydrogen production and distribution pathways will be developed and analysed, particularly for their carbon dioxide reduction potential. In particular, the capacity for the integration of water electrolysis systems associated with renewable energy power generation will be explored and compared with the conventional alternative steam reforming of methane.

Spatial development of hydrogen economy in a low-carbon UK energy system

Hydrogen technologies and infrastructures might play a significant role in meeting ambitious climate and energy policy goals of the UK Government. Nonetheless, studies on hydrogen are either limited in scope in that they do not take into account the relationships with the wider energy system drivers and constraints or do not consider how a hydrogen network might develop geographically. This pap...

Engineering Challenges of the Hydrogen Economy

HE TERM “HYDROGEN ECONOMY” is the title of a recent book [Rifkin, 2002], but the concept of using hydrogen as fuel for transportation systems has been advocated by environmentalists and others for at least three decades. There is no universally accepted definition of the “hydrogen economy,” but it is generally viewed as the replacement of the vast majority of petroleum fuels used by transportat...

Integration of Green Economy Concept into Fossil Fuels (Production and Consumption: Iran)

Iran as a rapidly developing country, whose economy is enriched by oil and gas exports, has to integrate Green Economy concept into its energy sector. In order to integrate environmental concerns into energy sector, an Energy-Environment Review (EER) was considered as the mainstreaming tool capable of examining the interface between energy and the environment. The results of the EER should be i...
